Chair's Welcome

Welcome to the Yale University School of Medicine’s Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology, and Reproductive Sciences. Our mission is to advance women’s reproductive health through a combination of cutting-edge research, compassionate patient care and outstanding clinical training.

In research, our department has a rich history of discovery. We have developed key drugs for fighting gynecologic cancers, invented some of the first techniques for fetal monitoring, and founded the Northeast’s first in vitro fertilization program. But we are always looking to the future — our current projects include developing techniques to diagnose ovarian cancer before it becomes life-threatening, devising minimally-invasive techniques for fetal surgery, enhancing our ability to select the embryos most likely to result in a live birth, and creating a full-service Women’s Health Center at our Long Wharf site.

Because our doctors are pioneers in research, patients at Yale Ob/Gyn know that they are receiving the most up-to-date care available. Our physicians are experts — specialists with deep knowledge of their fields — and patients benefit not only from their expertise but from the synergy that arises when clinical experts combine their skills with those of reproductive scientists in our labs. We also understand the importance of comfort and service, and so we provide our clinical services in a warm and personal setting.

Training is also at the core of our mission — we aim to cultivate the next generation of leaders in women’s health. We provide an outstanding and highly-competitive residency program, and our clerkship program for medical students is the top-ranked clerkship at Yale. We offer a full complement of fellowships, approved by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology, which combine excellent clinical training with premier research opportunities.

Thanks to these strengths, our department ranks as one of the best in the nation, as measured by its clinical innovations, federal research grant dollars, and the competitiveness of its training programs.
